On May 31 through June 2 Udmurtia hosted a joint delegation of the embassies of Estonia, Finland and Hungary in the Russian Federation headed by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Estonia to the Russian Federation Simmu Tiik, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Finland to the Russian Federation Matti Anttonen, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of the Republic of Hungary to the Russian Federation György Gilyán. Such joint visits by the heads of the embassies of the three countries to Russian regions where their related Finno-Ugric peoples live have become a good tradition; the first ambassadorial visit to Udmurtia dates back to the year of 2004. The purpose of the visit was to learn more about the socio-economic and ethnocultural development of the Udmurt Republic and the Udmurt people, as well as meet with the heads of the Udmurt Republic and its capital. On May 31 the Ambassadors had official meetings with Alexander Volkov, President of the Udmurt Republic, Alexander Soloviev, Chairman of the State Council of the Udmurt Republic, and Victor Balakin, Mayor of Izhevsk. At the meeting the Ambassadors were interested to learn more about various aspects of the socio-economic development of Udmurtia and its capital, the development of agriculture which remains the principal sphere of employment of the indiginous population of the republic, they also discussed numerous issues of Finno-Ugric cooperation in the spheres of culture, science, education and the development of contacts between young people. The Ambassadors expressed their satisfation with the state of interethnic relations, preservation and development of the Udmurt culture in the republic. |
