Higher Educational Institutions

Udmurt State University

The Udmurt State University is the oldest institution of higher education in the Udmurt Republic. Its foundation marked the beginning of the history of higher education in Udmurtia. For over 75 years the university has significantly contributed to the socio-economic development of the Udmurt Republic.

The university is the principal institution training specialists for all spheres of public education, science, culture, sports and Udmurtia’s economy and law system. The Udmurt State University combines training with research, it works in large-scale integration with the Russian Academy of Sciences institutes and other institutions of higher education, it possesses a well-developed techno park culture, develops extensive international relations. The university has a broad telecommunications net with ground and satellite channels, it maintains extensive ties with enterprises.

Today the Udmurt State University comprises 15 departments and 7 institutes, with a faculty of over 950; 25,150 students are trained in over 80 specialties.

The Udmurt State University has five branches. In 1995 a branch was established in the city of Nizhniy Tura (Sverdlovsk Oblast), in 1996 – in Kudymkar (Perm Territory), in 1998 – in Gubkinsky (Yamalo-Nenets District), in 2000 – in Votkinsk, and in 2002 – in Mozhga.

The Udmurt State University’s mission is to train solid professionals and harmonically developed persons, bring up young people in the spirit of tolerance and strengthen friendship between students of various ethnic groups.

Izhevsk State Technical University

In the Volga Federal District the Izhevsk State Technical University is a unique institution of higher education in the sphere of training specialists for the precision machinery industry and instrument production, including Russian defense enterprises. Since 1952 it has trained specialists for defense enterprises in Udmurtia and Russia. Originally name the Izhevsk Mechanical Institute, it was renamed Izhevsk State Technical University in 1993.

Today the technical university comprises 14 departments, two research institutes and 15 scientific and production organizations, a department providing retraining and advanced training of lecturers, and five branches. A multi-level training system is used in the technical university: it offers secondary professional training in 27 specialties, trains bachelors in 28 areas, 65 specialties, masters in 15 areas, and candidates of science in 46 specialties. There are over 21 thousand students, 193 post-graduate students, 61 graduands and 20 doctoral candidates.

The university’s faculty comprises 116 Doctors of Science and 402 Candidates of Science, experts from defense enterprises participate in training students, including the famous small arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov.

8 thesis review and approval councils in 24 scientific specialties function at the Izhevsk State Technical University. It publishes five scientific magazines, two of which are recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission for publishing thesis research results.

The university maintains partnership relations with 40 foreign higher educational institutions and organizations in 23 countries. Within the framework of academic mobility programs over 100 foreign students, trainees and post-graduate students from Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Egypt and other countries study at the Izhevsk State Technical University.

In 2002 the university was among the first Russian institutions of higher education accredited at the Ministry for Industry, Science and Technologies as a scientific organization. In 2006 it was accredited at the Federal Space Agency and granted the right to perform work associated with space activities.

In 2007 the Izhevsk State Technical University was accredited as participant in the “Umnik” program of the Foundation for Science and Technologies Small Business Assistance. In 2008 business incubator for the university’s students and young scientists was established basing on the Izhevsk State Technical University.

Izhevsk State Medical Academy

In 1930s Udmurtia was rapidly developing, its population grew, and the republic urgently needed doctors and medical personnel. The Izhevsk State Medical Institute was established in 1933. By early 90s it grew into a large educational and scientific center not only in Udmurtia, but in the Russian Federation as well. In 1995 it obtained a new status and became the Izhevsk State Medical Academy.

The academy trains doctors as required by state educational standards in the following fields: medical care, pediatrics, stomatology, advanced nurse care. 

Cooperation with health care institutions is one of the academy’s priorities. Its scientists introduce into clinical activities up-to-date diagnostics, treatment and management technologies, provide consultancy and treatment assistance.

The academy publishes three scientific magazines recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission for publishing the results of work performed on the basis of doctoral and candidate theses: “Morphological Gazette”, “Problems of Expert Reviews in Medicine”, “Demography, Ecology and the Health of Finno-Ugric Peoples”.

The Scientific Society of Young Scientists and Students plays an important role in the academy’s life, as well as its Department for International Relations. Every year these organizations hold conferences, seminars, round tables, etc. The academy performs a lot of work organizing international exchanges of students and young doctors with Yugoslavia, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Finland, Denmark, and other countries.

Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy

In August 1954 the Moscow Zoocultural Horse-Breeding Institute, organized in 1943 in the Golitsyno town, Moscow Oblast, was moved to Izhevsk and reorganized into the Izhevsk Agricultural Institute that obtained the status of an academy in 1995.

Today the Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy is a large educational, scientific and industrial complex training experts for the agricultural industry.

In accordance with its license the academy trains specialists in 15 specialties, provides post-graduate education in 13 specialties, and additional professional education in 6 specialties.

The academy’s highly qualified faculty comprises 42 professors and Doctors of Science, 220 Candidates of Science and assistant professors, 20 Distinguished Professors of the Russian Federation. The academy trains 4000 full-time students and 4000 students study at evening courses, it has a post-graduate school, five doctoral and candidate thesis review councils.

The Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy has its own experimental farm called Iyulskoe. It has the status of a pedigree farm with an area of 8083 hectares. The farm has 2400 cows, an experimental horse stable, a 300-hectare experimental field, a training ground, tractors, agricultural machines and automobiles. The academy and its training center hold regional, federal and international academic/industrial and academic/research conferences, seminars and symposia.

In 2001 the Udmurt Agroeducational District organization was established. It comprises the Izhevsk State Agricultural Academy as the main organization, and five agricultural colleges, two institutes, and nine farms.

The academy cooperates with institutions of higher education in Germany, Denmark, Holland, Great Britain, Switzerland, the USA, Finland, Sweden and Hungary. Every year over 150 students and professors visit them with traineeship purposes.

Glazov V.G.Korolenko State Pedagogical Institute

The Glazov State Pedagogical Institute named after V.G.Korolenko is one of the oldest higher educational institution in Udmurtia. Over 60 years it has trained tens of thousands of highly qualified teachers. Hundreds of its graduates became prominent figures in their professions: doctors of science, distinguished teachers, professors, artists and musicians, scientists, prominent in Russia and Udmurtia.

Scientific Institutions

Today a number of research institutes are functioning in Udmurtia. The Udmurt Science Center established with the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1991 plays an important role in the development of the republic’s scientific potential. The Center unites research institutions located on the territory of the Udmurt Republic, including the Institute of Physics and Technology, the Institute of Applied Mechanics, and the Udmurt Institute of History, Philology and Literature. Just recently one more research institution appeared in the Udmurt Republic: the Udmurt Branch of the Institute of Philosophy and Law of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Science.

In general, Udmurt scientists are engaged in research in the following areas: solid-state physics, material science, physics and mechanics, socio-economic problems of the region’s development, history, ethnography, archeology, literature of peoples living in Udmurtia, etc. The work of Udmurt scientists has been marked by State Prizes and other awards. Udmurtia’s research institutions greatly contribute to the training of highly qualified personnel for various industries.
